Frequently Asked Questions
What is psychodynamic therapy?
Psychodynamic therapy helps you understand the deeper patterns, emotions, and past experiences that shape how you feel and relate today. Rather than only managing symptoms, we explore what drives them so change lasts. You can read more about my psychodynamic approach and its guiding principles.
How is psychodynamic therapy different from CBT?
CBT is structured and skills-focused, targeting current thoughts and behaviors. Psychodynamic therapy explores underlying emotional patterns and their roots. Both are evidence-based, and neither is better overall. I often integrate them, drawing on whichever best fits your goals and the way you think.
How long does therapy take?
It depends on your goals. Some people feel meaningful relief within a few months of weekly sessions, while longer-standing patterns take more time to shift. We set a pace and goals together at the start and revisit them regularly, so you always know where things stand.
What happens in a first session?
The first session is a conversation, not a test. I'll ask what brought you in, a bit about your history, and what you hope to change. You can ask me anything too. There's no pressure to share everything at once — we move at a pace that feels comfortable.
Do you accept insurance?
I am an out-of-network provider and do not bill insurance directly. Many clients with PPO plans receive partial reimbursement through their out-of-network benefits. You can find more detail, including what to ask your insurer, on my fees & insurance page.
What is out-of-network reimbursement?
If your plan includes out-of-network benefits, you pay for sessions directly and your insurer reimburses a portion. I provide a monthly superbill — an itemized receipt — that you submit for reimbursement. Coverage varies by plan, so it's worth calling your insurer to confirm your specific benefits.
Do you offer telehealth?
Yes. I offer secure video sessions to clients across Massachusetts, alongside in-person sessions in Brookline. Many people find telehealth just as effective and far more convenient, especially busy students and professionals. We can also combine both formats depending on what works for your schedule.
Where is your office and what are your hours?
My office is on Beacon Street in Brookline, MA, convenient to Boston, Newton, and Chestnut Hill. Session times vary week to week, including some hours that suit students and working professionals. Contact me to ask about current availability and to find a time that fits.
Who do you work with?
I work with college students and adults across Massachusetts, with particular understanding of high-achieving students and professionals from my work at the MIT and Boston College counseling centers. Common concerns include anxiety, depression, trauma, relationships, and identity — though you don't need to be in crisis to benefit.
Is there a free consultation?
Yes. I offer a free initial consultation — a brief phone call to talk about what you're looking for, answer your questions, and sense whether we're a good match. Finding the right therapist matters, and there's no obligation to continue after the call.
How do I get started?
The simplest first step is to reach out to schedule a free consultation. We'll talk briefly about what's bringing you to therapy and any questions you have, then, if it feels right, book a first session in Brookline or by telehealth. There's no pressure at any stage.
I'm here for you.
